A teenager believed to have been killed by a Doomsday Cult was so badly burned and dismembered she had to be identified by her jawline.
Tylee Ryan, 17, had been missing since September along with younger brother Joshua ‘JJ’ Vallow, 7, before their bodies were found at the home of apocalyptic writer Chad Daybell.
The grisly discovery was made last month.
Gravedigger Daybell had married the kids’ mum Lori Vallow – a ‘doomsday cultist member’ – before they both fled Idaho just weeks after the brother and sister vanished.
Vallow wept as she heard her daughter’s body was unrecognisable when it was discovered by police.
However JJ’s body was reportedly buried intact, and his face and haircut could still be identified.
It is not yet known how the victims died.
Vallow appeared at Fremont County Court via Zoom charged with two counts of conspiracy to commit destruction, alteration or concealment of evidence.
Court documents said it was “not possible to identify those remains by simply looking at them as they were too damaged by fire and dismemberment and no longer had any recognizable features”.
The papers continue: “However, Dr. Glen Smith, an orthodontist and Deputy Coroner in the Ada County Coroner’s Office was able to identify these remains as belonging to Tylee Ryan by matching an irregular jawline with an X-ray of Tylee when she was alive,’ a police officer wrote about the discovery.”
In a statement after the bodies were found, the children’s families said: “This is the worst news we will ever get in our lives.
“The Woodcocks and the Ryans are confirming that the human remains found by law enforcement on Chad Daybell’s property are indeed our beloved JJ and Tylee.
“We are filled with unfathomable sadness that these two bright stars were stolen from us, and only hope that they died without pain or suffering.”
Vallow, 46, has spent the last four months behind bars charged with two counts of abandonment and desertion, after being arrested in Hawaii in February.
In court documents, Madison County Prosecutor Rob Wood said he believes Daybell either concealed or helped hide the remains knowing that they were about to be used as evidence in court.
The two children were last seen together at Yellowstone National Park while on a family holiday in early September.
Tylee has not been seen since September 8, while JJ was last seen at school on September 22.
Vallow and Daybell had maintained that they were safe before fleeing.
